The American Consulate General in Florence is part of the United States Mission to Italy, which includes the American Embassy in Rome and the American Consulates in Milan, Florence, and Naples. 

The American Consulate in Florence is the smallest post in Italy with just 18 staff and three Foreign Service Officers.

The Florence Consular District encompasses the regions of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, with the exception of the two northern-most provinces in Emilia-Romagna (Parma and Piacenza).  The 18 provinces have a population of more than six and a half million.  Major cities are Florence, Bologna, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Livorno, Prato, Arezzo, Modena, Ravenna, Ferrara, Forli' and Rimini. 

The Consular Section is responsible for the welfare and whereabouts of U.S. citizens traveling and residing abroad. Consular Staff also process nonimmigrant visa applications from applicants who do not qualify for the Visa Waiver program

The Political/Economic Section keeps contacts with local authorities and politicians, reports on economic issues, and promotes U.S. policy goals such as the protection of intellectual property.

The Public Affairs Section handles all aspects of press and cultural relations for the U.S. Consulate in Florence. The Section works to strengthen and develop U.S.-Italian relations by enunciating and explaining U.S. policies and creating, promoting and administering educational and cultural exchange programs that increase understanding between the people of Italy and the United States.

The Commercial Section works to promote American exports and represents U.S. business interest in Italy through trade events and individualized assistance to companies
